Dee I have subscribed to ancestry in the past but it has currently expired - it did allow me to look at the household members in 1881 but if you click on the image it brings up the payment options. Jane

Hi Mad alice you can't view that actually image of the census but it does allow you to search the name and shows you who is in the household

Its something to do with the fact that the 1881 is already free to view on the LDS site and if Ancestry made a charge, no-one would pay when they can view it elsewhere for free. Ancestry offer it firstly to make their census collection complete and secondly in the hope that anyone who views it free on their website will then pay to view their relatives on the other censuses that they have. Can any one explain why when you search Ancestry you can view 1881 census without charge but have to pay for 1871, 1891 and 1901? Thanks
