Thank you Keith, Peter & Maggie. I might do a cursory search of the HLI etc. and if I don't turn up anything, I'll keep the box. I just don't want to turn it over to anyone who has absolutley no interest in it what so ever. I've had it for over 20 years now and I kind of like it. Margaret

Don't be so sure he's not related!! I had a similar heirloom - it bothered me for 10 years - until I found out that it belonged to the sister (born 1821) of the girl who married the brother of my great great grandmother - a series of spinsters and childless marriages brought it to my great aunt's house.

Just had a thought you could see if he has a Medal card that might give you a lead to his home town.

Ian, Does the HLI cover Scotland &/or England? My grandparents were from Scotland, so I'm thinking they probably picked it up or were given it in Scotland. I'll check the 1901 census for Scotalnd. Is there someplace I can contact to check records? What does CWGC mean? Dea, As far as I can tell, there are no Parkers in that branch of the tree. Margaret

Margaret, HLI = Highland Light Infantry. I note that there are two casualties on CWGC but both higher ranks than private and both killed 1916. On NA medal roll index there appear to be two David Parkers, both privates in the HLI, so cannot narrow it down more. Any D. Parkers living in the area on 1901 census? Just a thought. Ian

It's a great thought but I would find a little bit more about it first, who knows what you could be revealing (a secret lover). Keith

I have this carved wooden trinket box with a name carved on the bottom. I am pretty sure I got it from my mother's side of the family. Since the name doesn't appear on the family tree as far as I can tell, I would like to try and find someone in this family and return it. Especially after reading a previous thread about the bloke who sold his relatives belongings, because they weren't a 'real relative'. The carving reads: Pte. D. Parker - H.L.I. - July 10, 1917 Any ideas where I can begin? Margaret
