ww1 medal cards? how do u read them +

does any1 know how to understand medal cards? natalie very kindly searched it out for me aty kew its my grandads ww1 medal card but its foreign to me. does any1 know if from a medal card you can find out more info eg: age, town or county they lived? dob parents names etc please help as i feel on my way now ive been doin it for months + actually didnt think my grandad exsisted now i know he did i need more thanks jacky

yes there is a site especially for this........... i only found out through readin Your family tree mag which i subscribe too its brill,,,, if you would like to send me a mesage i will look at mags and scan you the info... ok.......(maybe i shouldnt say this on here sorry folks)

hi jacky,it depends on the info your relation give when they signed up,my grandad,was in at 16,his mother got him out ,put he was back at 18, the info was all lies on signing at 16,his father was killed same war ,info from cwgc just his surname and army number regiment, date of death and where he his buried, tony

On a medal card you will generally find your relatives regimeny ... middle top usually in shorthand necxt to this his service number, which will prove useful. Below this, to the left, is the record of his medals awarded The B usually stands for his battalion but this did vary in the war due to deaths etc. What you are looking for is his service record. It may have survived and you can find it at Kew. Hope this helps John

I've got 2 WWW1 medal card records. One I paid £3.50 for and downloaded from the Nat. Archives site and the other I copied when I went to Kew. They don't give a lot of info, just the person's name, rank & regiment plus their medal entitlement. The one I downloaded had 5 other medal cards on the same page all of which gave more info about wounds, dates they joined/left etc. nell
