An Olde Crone Report 6 Mar 2005 23:39

Gerri My friend used to work in a County Records Office. She said that she has seen: Reels of film dropped so hard they unrolled the length of the room and in one case, down the stairs. People fainting. People being sick. Several wet chairs. And a fatal heart attack. So, unless you have something more startling in mind than any of the above, don't worry - they've seen it all before! Good luck Marjorie

Gerri Don't be daft! If you know where the birth happened, you can check the parish register is on the IGI by googling 'Hugh Wallis batch numbers' and search from there. If its not on the IGI, or you can't find it, then, yes, you will have to be very brave. It is possible that the local family history society have done a transcription of the parish baptism registers and they often have a member who will look for you for a few £. You can google to find out if this is possible. If not, then you need to go to the Records Office. I don't know which one you need, but I have now been to a few, including Cambridge, which is tiny, and Essex, which is HUGE. Some have registers on microfilm and others, on microfiche. Some have printed transcripts in books. All the people who work in these places should be interested in helping you. That is part of their job, and your taxes pay their wages, so don't be intimidated. nell

To find a birth in 1829/30. Do I have to go to a records office? That first visit scares me half to death. Gerri x
