Stan you are WONDERFUL. Thank you for all that info - it has given me a great start. So Nana was really a Florence? No wonder she was known as Pat... LOL Bev

Hi Bev, I think your grandmother's birth record will be Nicholson, Florence E (mother's maiden name Lowe) Jul-Sep 1916, South Stoneham 2c 178. The South Stoneham Registration District covered about half of the present City of Southampton. Regards Stan

Nell - Overseas customers are not charged extra for airmail...or they haven't realised that New Zealand is overseas. All mail is airmail these days anyway. I just pay the standard GBP7, on line. which converts to NZ$ at the current exchange rate. Ity just takes the extra week, not that I am complaining because I ordered three on 13 Feb, one arrived on 4 March (despatched 25 Feb) and the other two aren't here yet!! Peter

Bev Your father's birth certificate (Crewe, Donald W., mother's maiden name Nicholson) is Apr-Jun 1942, Southampton 2c 44. The marriage between William Crewe and Florence E. Nicholson is Jan-Mar 1941, New Forest 2b 2175. If they gave their ages correctly you will be able to find their births. You will also have their fathers' names. Regards Stan

Bev I'd look for the 1899/1900 births first on Freebmd (google to find and scroll down for search boxes). As you say London you could check if you can find them on the 1901 census index which is free to see which Albert Hedges aged about 2 in London is likeliest to be yours. This would give a clue as to his likely place of birth in London (Big place!) All bmds after 1910 are best found on www*1837online*com -replace * with . to use. This is a payperview site which shows the GRO index pages. Birth certs and marriage certs will give maiden name of mum/wife as well as father's occupation. Order online here: http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/faqs.asp this is the faqs (frequently-asked questions) page which you would probably find useful to read first. Overseas customers are charged extra for airmail postage. At the time of ordering you get an expected delivery date. nell nell

Thanks guys. My names and date info is as follows:- Pat (not her birth name) Nicholson born around 1916 in Southampton, married William Crewe (unk dates) from Wales (dunno when). Had my father Donald William in 1942 (Southampton). I know Pat's father was Guiseppi who was adopted. Also Dorothy Louise Hedges (married name) born around 1901 and Albert Hedges born around 1899 - both London. Lived in South Harrow when they had Uncle Den in 1930 and mum Christine Dorothy in 1936. Thats all I've got. So like some of you have suggested, some UK web sites might hold the key (?). Thanks Bev

Hi Bev, I'm in Oz too and have been successful in finding some stuff out in England. There are lots of web pages you can check out look on some of the other threads. I just recieved 4 birth Cetificates from England took ages to get here but I found some new names and maiden names of the mothers from the certs. Start with the name and place if you have it and look on freebmd(.)rootsweb(.)com take () off, they have a link to free census as well which may help, I haven't had any luck because the area I want is not transrcibed yet. I'm new at this as well and have only got back to my great great grandparents but i'm pleased with that beware it's an addictive hobby. Have fun Julie

Bev We have numerous resources on-line here in the UK that might be of use to you but it will depend on when your relatives were born or died. Some of these resources are free but some are pay per view. If you provide some rough dates as to when they would have been in England then I am certain some people can point you in the right direction so that you can get started. Karen

All I have available to me are names and vague dates of my grandparents (all dec). The problem is they lived and died in England and I am in Australia. Any suggestions? Just might add here that rellies arnt too helpful at this stage (aunts and uncs). Cheers from Bev
