I've tried looking on Scotlandspeople using similar names but haven't had any luck. I'm becoming very disheartened. It does seem strange that none of the three show up so it prob. is a spelling thing. I checked out the earlier suggestion re Jane, the housekeeper one, but it's not her as there is a husband shown - Thomas. I've also checked out the IGI site but drawn a blank there too. If you like rooting about in other people's families - here's another question for you. Why would one side of the family show up twice in 1871 and 1881 with the right surname, Moran, then in 1891, same address, definitely the same family, all the children are there, ages right etc, but this time the name is Gibson! Do you think there's a skeleton in the closet there. That would be interesting. Any suggestions re this. Thanks in advance.

Days Glenys......? Nooooooooo.. we're all keen to help, and we, or should I say I, like to have a good old nose around for other people, whilst taking a little break from my own lot;) Maybe The Richards' Snr & Jnr are in Scotland in 1881, mistranscribed Sam

The two Richard Hartleys you found are the right family. Jane was widowed in 1865, then she and Richard senior had an illegitimate child in 1866 called Richard, who died at 11 mths old from measles. They married in 1869 and had the second child, also Richard, in 1870. So, it's definitely the right family. I don't know what this IGI is - I'm a novice at this as you prob. guessed, but I'll check it out and hopefully make some progress. Thank you all for your help - and so quick, I thought I'd have to wait days for any answers.

Glenys No sign of the male Hartleys on the 1881 Scotland or England. Only Jane declaring herself b. Scotland is the one Sammy has identified. Regards Ellen.

There are 3 children showing on the IGI for this couple - interestingly 1 Richard born before their marriage date! Of course it may be another Richard and Jane. You searched for: Father: Richard Hartley, Mother: Jane Mack Exact Spelling: Off [refine search] Prepare selected records for download International Genealogical Index / British Isles - 3 Select records to download - (50 maximum) 1. HENRY HILTON HARTLEY - International Genealogical Index Gender: Male Birth: 14 JAN 1874 Bridgeton, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland 2. RICHARD HARTLEY - International Genealogical Index Gender: Male Birth: 17 JUN 1866 Calton, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland 3. RICHARD HARTLEY - International Genealogical Index Gender: Male Birth: 04 JUN 1870 Calton, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland I'll have a look on the 1881 for them. Regards Ellen. forgot to say they are all extracts, so pretty reliable.

Wow - I didn't expect such a quick response. So - I've tried Scotlandspeople but they don't show up there in any of the census documents. I know that Richard jnr and his mother Jane were both born in Scotland, I've traced their birth details. I don't know where Richard snr was born. Richard snr and his wife were married in Manchester in 1869 and their son Richard jnr was born in 1870 in Scotland so they must've lived in both England and Scotland. The 1901 entry is definitely Richard jnr and his wife, also called Jane just to confuse things, as I traced them back through their daughter, Elizabeth, who was my grandmother. Re the 1881 entry, it sounds like the right person as at that time Jane was married and had her son Richard - was there any info. re husband/son? I'll check this out though. Thanks for the help, but can you think of any reason why they don't show up as a family group in any of the census documents I've looked at (1871, 1881, 1891).

It shouldn't matter where they were in the country, censuses were taken everywhere, workhouses, hospitals....etc... Where did Richard jnr marry? Do you know that they lived in both Scotland & England? Who did he marry... This could be Richard jnr, 1901 Richard Hartley 30 Scotland Head North Manchester Lancashire Jane Hartley 29 C not st, Wales Wife North Manchester Lancashire Elizabeth Hartley 10 Manchester, Lancashire, England Daughter North Manchester Lancashire Annie Hartley 7 Manchester, Lancashire, England Daughter North Manchester Lancashire Richard Hartley 4 Manchester, Lancashire, England Son North Manchester Lancashire Walter Hartley 2 Manchester, Lancashire, England Son North Manchester Lancashire Robert Hartley 6 months Manchester, Lancashire, England Son North Manchester Lancashire John Hair 45 Scotland Boarder North Manchester Lancashire

Hi - I'm needing help tracing relatives called Hartley. I traced Richard Hartley, born c. 1844, who married Jane Mack (born Scotland in 1838) in Manchester in 1869, and they had a son also called Richard, born in Glasgow in 1970. After that they disappear! I've looked in the 1871, 1881, 1891 census records in both England and Scotland for all three and though there are plenty of Richard Hartleys none of them has the right wife/son. I know they've not disappeared off the face of the earth cos I've got details of the marriage Richard (the son). So, has anyone any ideas where else I could look. Just a thought - what happened if people went into workhouses? Were they shown on the census? Any ideas would be much appreciated. Oh, and I've tried using the 'soundex' thingy for similar names but again no luck.
