That Louis would be the right age for your great grandfather. Have you tried googling Synagogues for the area in which he died - if he were practicing then he would have belonged to one surely? What info do you have about him other than the death cert? Do you have his wifes name? Who was the informant for the death? If you got his marriage certificate you would see his father's name and occupation (I assume the certs would be the same for the faith) and could then tie it in with the entry in the 1901. You could also get his birth certificate with his mothers name, including maiden name. What job does Louis have in the census - is it something that he would have kept all his life and does anyone know what grandad did for his occupation?

If you got his marriage cert it would give his age at marriage and his father's name. This would help you in pinpointing him in the cnesus and sending for his birth cert. Jeanette x

If he was 77 when he died, he could have been born in 1884 or 1883 depending on whether or not his birthday was before or after the day he died. The easiest way to get his exact date of birth would be to get his birth certificate. The date of birth is only on death certs after 1969 and the one for my grandfather is wrong anyway! I haven't found any graves for my relatives that give dates other than their age at death and date of death. I don't think is is necessarily a Jewish idea not to have date of birth - more to do with how much you could afford to pay the stonemason. nell

I have discovered that my grt-grandfather Louis Lewis who last resided in Leicester died 16/11/1961 and is buried at the Gilroes cemetery but unfortunately the grave has no memorial. I have managed to get a death certificate but this does not have his date of birth on it only the age he died which was 77yrs. This means he was born in 1884. He was Jewish and is buried in the Hebrew section at Gilroes and I have tried to find out his d.o.b through the acting burial&cremation manager but no luck there. I don't know if it is Jewish standard practice not to have the deceased d.o.b and would be interested to know if this is the case. I have found a LEWIS family on the 1901 census which has a LOUIS as one of the sons, aged 17 this makes it possible that he could be my grt-grandfather, (born in Bethnal Green).I would appreciate any advice or help as to where I can go from here as I feel I have hit a wall. Many thanks.
