The index number that you have refered to is the Volume and Page numbers that are sown on sites such as FreeBMD and 1837online. As the index reference you need to put in District: Barnsley, Volume: 9c, page 249. If you were hoping to get the names of your Grandmother's parents, the standard/ short certificate won't help as it only gives her registered birth name, date of birth and the district she was registered. The full certificate gives parents names and occuption of the father. Also the mothers maiden name.

The 9c 249 is the GRO reference number. That tells them the page and the volume for the cert

Hello all, I have trainer wheels on, how do I find a GRO index number for my grandmother. Went to site to order cert for Grandmother Sarah, born 6 may 1889, have short cert, registered 21 June 1889, in sub distict of Barnsley Darfield. went into Fbdm and found the numbers, Barnsley 9c, page 249, but cannot get GRO site to accept request as I do not have GRO Index number.....bicycle wobbling in an embrassing way! Thanks JA
