Hi, Does anyone know a way I can find out where different army regiments were based in 1901? I have an ancestor who was at Shorncliffe camp, Kent during the 1901 census and in it he is only described as a soldier which doesn't really help me find out anything else about him! Please help! Thanks Lyndsay

It was probably the Royal East Kent Regiment (The Buffs) although this camp was also used by the Royal Field Artillery but probably after 1914. Try doing a search for Shorncliffe Army Camp, there are quite a few sites which come up and you may find more information from one of these. Kathleen

Lyndsay, This is not going to be an entirely helpful reply, but there is a kind of 'standard' reference book (can't recall the name) which records which units were where for much of the past. I encountered it on the 'help desk' at the PRO - because I had a similar question. It maybe that if you ring the nearest major library to Shorncliffe, their archivist might have more info .... it's a bit hit-and-miss as to whether you get a helpful person, however, I have mostly found them absolute treasures! Good luck, Jane

If you have an idea of the Regiment or Corps typing in regiments(.)org will lead you to a good site. Paul

Thanks for the suggestions. My grandma thought he was in the Sherwood Forrestors but when I looked for his childrens births I thought it was 64th Foot but I can't find the piece of paper I wrote it on unfortunately. We also think he changed regiments as when he was a sergant, Grandma thinks he got made up to an officer., apparently as far as major! although I haven't found proof of this yet. I had tried googling Shorncliff camp but hadn't found anything useful. Well I have some new ideas to try now. thanks lyndsay

I started in the army in 1978 in shorncliffe! I would think in 1901 it would have had a number of regiments based in the town, there were at least 4 seperate barracks in 1978. The largest was called Sir John Moore and other barracks include Napier and St Martins Plain camp, also amny units only spent a short time there in transit from Folestone and Dover to other parts of the world. also units spent weeks in shornecliff whilst using the large firing ranges at hythe and Lydd.
