Wow! Thank you all for your help. I now feel a right fool now as I have just realised that I made a mistake in my original message. I found this person in prison in the 1881 and not the 1901 census. Therefore it was most likely Bellevue Prison after all. I can only balme over enthusiasm, bad typing and a looming stomach virus which was clearly affecting my brain and laid me low for most for the weekend! Thanks again everyone. I'm now back to normal and will be checking this out properly! Louise |

Hi Louise The only prison in Manchester since Belle Vue was demolished is Strangeways which is in the very centre of Manchester (not far from the Cathedral). I'm not sure what road its on technically BUT I guess if you wandered up Hyde Road far enough you'd get to it eventually! I'm going to Manchester Recs on Monday for a couple of other members who can't get there due to distance so I'll ask around and see whether anyone there has any ideas or an idea where records for it might be held. Just discovered my first ancestor who spent time inside courtesy of Her Majesty! Not sure why yet but he was inside for the 1901 census at HM Prison, Hyde Road, Manchester. I’ve done a Google search and got info about a Bellevue Prison at this address BUT it was demolished in 1890. Has anyone else come across a prison in Hyde Road, Manchester or know where I can find out more? This guy was clearly locked up somewhere! I’m assuming it’s another thing to add to my ever growing list of things to look up when I get chance to visit Manchester library and records office later this year. However, if anyone knows of any good websites with info about prisoners I’d be very grateful. Cheers, Louise |
