Plymouth is a goodly distance from Portsmouth/Portsea - not interchangeable as birthplaces. There is, of course, the naval seaport connection (= rivalry!). Christine

Jean, Odd thing is she didn't marry until 1898 but I'm unable to find her in 1891, unless she's with James. Her dad was an excavator. Births Mar 1867 URRY Elizabeth Rebecca Portsea 2b 463 Marriages Sep 1898 Urry Elizabeth Rebecca Portsea 2b 964 Crista

Sam, Thanks for that - I just checked 1891 & found the same thing. Im afraid we've had no contact with my father or his family for about 50yrs! I only found out last year my father had died, so there is no hope there. I beleive my grandfather had half brothers,??his mother was in South Africa. There is a death in India for 1892 so whether grandfather was born there? Crista, The wife is a Elizabeth Rebecca nee ???rycan't read the name I suppose James could have been an excavator then joined the army Thanks for looking Jean

James Edward may have had another occupation, then joined up for WW1. What about looking for death in service records for him? On FreeBMD there's a birth of a William James Long Portsea 2b 546 and another William James Long Plymouth 5b 246, both Jun 1891.

Jean, Edwin and Edward seem interchangeable. I suspect you might have the right birth cert. I can't seem to find the family in 1901 though. What was the mother's name? There's only one James Edwin Long on FreeBMD. Here he is in 1901: Name Age in 1901 Birthplace Relationship Civil Parish County/Island View Image Ada Long 32 Bradford, Yorkshire, England Wife Bradford Yorkshire Ada Long 9 Bradford, Yorkshire, England Daughter Bradford Yorkshire Albert Long 4 Bradford, Yorkshire, England Son Bradford Yorkshire James Edwin Long 33 Bradford, Yorkshire, England Head Bradford Yorkshire Mary Long 2 Bradford, Yorkshire, England Daughter Bradford Yorkshire Minnie Long 6 Bradford, Yorkshire, England Daughter Bradford Yorkshire Willie Long 11 Bradford, Yorkshire, England Son Bradford Yorkshire However, I think Willie is William Christopher. Sorry I don't think that is him. I've just found Mary J Long on the 1891 census and her husband is called Mark. Do you know if your grandfather had any brothers or sisters and if so, their names?

This is the only 9 year old I can find, could this be him? Name Age in 1901 Birthplace Relationship Civil Parish County/Island View Image Daisy Long 6 Freemantle, Hampshire, England Daughter Shirley Hampshire Hilda M Long 6 weeks Freemantle, Hampshire, England Daughter Shirley Hampshire Lile E Long 7 Freemantle, Hampshire, England Daughter Shirley Hampshire Mark Long 6 weeks Freemantle, Hampshire, England Son Shirley Hampshire Mark G Long 7 Freemantle, Hampshire, England Son Shirley Hampshire Mary J Long 34 Orcheston St George, Wiltshire, England Head Shirley Hampshire Violet A Long 2 Freemantle, Hampshire, England Daughter Shirley Hampshire William J Long 9 Southampton Son Shirley Hampshire Looking at the image, Mary J Long is the head but is described as married rather than widowed so it is possible her hubby was away with the army? Just started my fathers family & come to a halt at the first hurdle! Looking for the birth of William James Long born c1892 ? where. Marriage certificate 1920 Landport, Portsmouth states father James Edward Pte 40th South Lancashire Regt. - deceased. As William was married in Landport I ordered a birth certificate for Landport but it gives the father as James Edwin - Excavator? Any suggestions greatly received In hope Jean
