I would be ever so greateful if someone could give me a pointer on where to look next. I am still a novice and am probably overlooking something really obvious. I have asked about my gt. gt. grandmother before and the advice given was to check out her marriage cert which I did, but it hasn' t really helped much. Right. I am looking for the birth of Alice Elizabeth Baker. I will give you what I know. In Oct 1885 she married Frederick Thomas Stevens. info on marriage cert states she was 20, giving an approx birth year of 1865. Her father is Henry Baker, occupation Carpenter. In 1891 she is living in Brixton with Frederick and 3 children. She is noted as being 26 on the census (I think) which would give her birth year as 1865 in 1901 she is living in Streatham and her age is 33 giving her birth year as 1868. She died young in 1903 shoreditch aged 34 making her birth year 1869. One census also states she was born in the Isle of Wight, and another, Camberwell (which is most likely I guess). I can't seem to find a birth for an Alice Elizabeth Baker and I looked for a Henry Baker (occ. carpenter) on the 1881 census assuming she was still living at home. I would just really like to know when and where she was born. We assumed she was only 16/17 from the family rumours when she married so that was obviously a wrong assumption. Where can I go next? TIA Claire xx

LOL Sorry to bombard you with info. I thought the more the better.;o) I am pretty sure they are the same person on both census' because they had several children and I know all the children's names so I checked they were all there. I'm afraid I did not write the ref for the 1891 census down, being such a novice ( and I trawled through the whole of brixham too. won't make that mistake again)!! Sorry, not being much help (to you OR myself) Claire xx

Thank you Crista. I think that seems more likely as her father's name is Henry on her marriage cert. Can you tell if he was a carpenter? Claire xx

Claire, He was listed as a labourer and was dead by 1881. Who were the witnesses to the marriage? Might be some clues there. Crista

Thanks for all your work Jess. You are great! ;O) So just one more question then. Is it possible that although the family were from Dorset, they popped across to the isle of Wight for a little holiday where Alice was born and later, as she was so young when they moved to Camberwell, that is where she THOUGHT she had been born, hence the conflicting info? (am I starting to think like a geneaologist yet)? Claire xx

There's a Thomas Charles W Elstob and Grace Bedson both born in Lambeth. Can't find Grace in 1881. She might be close to Alice then. Crista
