Somewhere there should be an admissions register (Prison Calendar?) where it will all be recorded. The local records office would be the place to enquire.

My wife has an ancestor who was in Preston Prison at the time of the 1881 census. I wish she had told me her history before I married her! Anyway, does anyone know how I can find out for what offence he was in prison ? Also, his wife does not show anywhere on the 1881 census, though appears before it and again in 1901. I am guessing she may have been in Ireland at the time, but does anyone have other thoughts ? Thanks Graeme
