If you've some idea of where you want to look, try the Leitrim/ Roscommon site (Google will give accurate address). They cover other counties, where material is available. Cover is patchy, but most Irish family history is in people's heads- sometimes more accurately than others! Nothing beats a trip to the home area, & asking lots of questions. Wish I'd asked a lot more when I was over there last summer! Good reason to go back..... Good luck, happy hunting, Mary

Annie, After searching for details of my Gt. Grandfathers birth for many years I eventually tried Irishfamilyresearch(.)co(.)uk and had his birth and parents details 3 days later. You might want to give them a try. Christine.

Annie - have you tried genfindit.com they have various scales of fees for searching Irish Records depending on the information you have. I have only just found them so don't know how good they are. Does anyone have any comment on them?

In 1885, there was no division of North and South; all of Ireland was British.

If you go in the genuki website you can find very useful information about Irish research, and rootsweb(.)com for mailing lists and message boards. Happy hunting. Joy

The BMD index is only available in Ireland. Where are you looking in Ireland? As mentioned, Familysearch has baptisms/marriages online (and more available in their family history centres, as long as you know parish and date). Ulster Historical Foundation has some Northern Ireland transcripts of births/baptisms and marriages (incomplete). Searches are free, it's £10 to view the transcriptions. Republic of Ireland BMD exchange is at http://www.thauvin.net/chance/ireland/bmd/ Northern Ireland is technically covered by http://www.ukbdm.org.uk/

No where really on the web, other than FAmilySearch night help you. It also depends on how far back this birth is in Ireland. They only started recording Births from 1864. (and even though it was mandatory some didn't register.... my great grandmother and her siblings are no where on there! typical!)
