Tom have you tryed to trace him through his Merchent sailors ticket. They all have to be regesterd and should have his last known address befor he quit. i do not know if Kew will have the records or the Minestry that deals with them as he could of retierd long after the war. You could also try the Seamans union, I would say following up on this line might be your best bet.

Thomas Report 2 Mar 2005 17:09

LETS TRY THIS WAY!! I AM THOMAS JOHN MARTIN PETTENGELL, BORN 7/10/1936 IN BECONTREE DAGENHAM, ESSEX (WHERE IS STILL LIVE). I KNOW THAT I AM AT LEAST THE SECOND OFFSPRING OF MY FATHER THOMAS JOHN PETTENGELL BUT HAVE TRIED ALL MANNER OF THOUGHTS TO TRACK WHAT HAPPENED TO SOMEONE I KNEW AS MY STEPBROTHER, MARTIN (THATS WHERE I INHERITED MY THIRDNAME FROM). HOWEVER, I THINK THAT MY FATHER WAS MARRIED AT LEAST ONCE BEFORE HE MET MY MOTHER, PRISCILLA, MAY HART, AND THAT MARTIN MAY WELL HAVE RETAINED HIS BIRTH MOTHERS FIRST MARRIED SURNAME, THAT IS THE SURNAME I WOULD LIKE TO UNCOVER. HE WOULD PROBABLY HAVE BEEN AT LEAST 15-20 YEARS OLDER THAN ME, I ONLY MET HIM ABOUT THREE TIMES WAY BACK, AND I KNOW THAT HE SERVED IN THE MERCHANT NAVY DURING WW2 ON OIL TANKERS, NOT A VERY SAFE OCCUPATION. I DONT REALLY KNOW HOW TO SEARCH FOR THIS INFORMATION, HAVE THOUGHT OF GOING TO MY LOCAL LIBRARY AND LOOKING UP ELECTORIAL REGISTER RECORDS FOR MY AREA AS I KNOW MY FATHERS FIRST WIFE DID LIVE HERE, WOULD THAT SHOW HER FIRST MARRIED NAME??? I KNOW ITS ANOTHER LONG SHOT BUT I AM CURIOUS ABOUT THIS, NOT ESSENTIAL I FIND THE ANSWER BUT WOULD BE SATISFYING TOM PETTENGELL
