Dawnieher3headaches Report 2 Mar 2005 12:21

Am I going mad (yes probably) Have lost my Fossetts' and no its not a new disease. I have William Fossett born c 1790 in Surrey. Have him in Lewisham in 1871 census aged 80 retired from the Admiralty Medical Department. Have found a letter on the internet that was sent by a William K Fossett on behalf of Sir William Burnett William was First Class Clerk at the Admiralty dated 1847. His Son Silvanus King Fossett married Jane Akhurst in 1877, their daughter Florence born march 1878 and their son Frederick Silvanus born 1880. The first sighting of Silvanus is on the 1901 census living with Florence (now married) her husband and son and frederick is with them to. Silvanus was a Watchman. Where the blazes are they on any of the other censuses. People have looked for me with all variations but no joy. Please help me or I might have to join my 2 year old in throwing lunch on my head. Dawn

Make sure I've got this right .... 1901 you said earlier 'The first sighting of Silvanus is on the 1901 census living with Florence (now married) her husband and son and frederick is with them too....' So now you see him as - 'transcribed as Forrett silvanus is Silvann' So deffo not appearing as SILVANUS in ANY census ?

Right - 99% certain he never used the forename King on any census ...

Anna Report 2 Mar 2005 13:34

How about him using the surname KING? Theres a King family on 1891 in West Ham,Some of the children include Frederick, age 10 born Stratford Jennett age 4 born Forest Gate and Kate age 2 born Forest gate the ages of these kids match info from 1901. Also the heads occupation is Watchman on 1891.(his name is down as John on 1891,wife Jane) This is probably not them but there is a visitor by the name of William Akhurst age 21 which as you said this was the wifes maiden name,it might be worth checking Anna

Laird Thats about it. Confusing I know. Ann That is them thank you. Akhurst was his wifes Jane Maiden name. might be her brother as from what I think is Janes death she was a bit younger than hubby. At last we are getting somewhere,. Why don't they make it easy for us. Thanks Dawn

Have now got them under king on 1881 but why has he changed his name to John Florence birth cert and marriage cert is down was Silvanus King Fossett and thats what he signed on marriage cert as witness. And why has Jane changed her name on the 1881 to Agness Jane King. Florence is King as well but is definitely a Fossett on Birth Cert etc. I have their marriage as 1877 so thats at least two children beforehand. Thank you for your help is much appreciated and thank you Laid for all the looking up the other day as well you are a star. Dawn See takes me so long to type youve already done it. Marriage was Medway which is kent so Agness Jane or whatever she wants to be called would be about right.

Interesting. If it is Silvanus ... then -apparently- :- o Has 2 kids before marriage o Marries as Fossett o Between 1877 and 1881 changes identity - name and PoB o Stays with new Id till 1901, but signs daur's cert in original Id .... Hmmmmm - might be worth checking into bank robberies in the 1878-1880 period - LOL Fascinating .... but I think the 1891 census with the bro-in-law visiting is pretty conclusive ?

Laird See its all logical now, one of his brothers was a magistrate/justice of the peace he obviously did something wrong and changed his name so big bro wouldn't get him. Other thing he chaged was a Ship Steward on 1881 and then becomes a nightwatchman think on Florence birth cert is Ship Steward but on her marriage in 1900 is a nightwatchman. Mind boggles oh what fun families are. Thanks again Dawn
