Tips on searching marriages

Hi. Just wanted to know if anyone had any tips on searching marriages on 1837online. I know both marriage partners (obviously)! but can you only search for one name. I have no clue as to the year so am trawling through every quarter for all feasible years. Early 20th century is all i know! Also, why does it show page that DON'T have my ancestors name in? So far I've viewed 13 pages and 4 of them had no James Hayward in it. So I've wasted 4 units! Joanne

Joanne, did you try Freebmd first? What is the name of the bride, what area/date? Familyrelatives site is a much better bet for this sort of search as you can enter names and area and a span of years and just click on the ones you actually want to view.

Joanne, When you search on 1837online you are getting matches for the first 3 letters of the surname. Some of these pages won't contain the name Hayward. You might be better off checking http://www.familyrelatives.org as that is fully transcribed from 1866 to 1920. Crista

I haven't heard of the other site and I've just bought £10 of units for 1837!! The area is Yorkshire and the bride is Maggy Ellis. Possible town is Pontefract. Joanne

Ive got a few units left on familyrellies - Ill have a quick look - early 1900 you said? Hayward James Barnsley.9c 377 Marriage 4 1907 2 Hayward James Harold Dewsbury.9b 1239 Marriage 4 1907 3 Hayward James Hull.9d 407 Marriage 1 1902 4 Hayward James Pontefract.9c 172 Marriage 2 1905 5 Hayward James Wakefield.9c 2 Marriage 2 1903 There is one there for 1905 in Pontefract. Unfortunately this has gobbled up my units so you will have to check on 1837 giving same year and quarter to see if your Maggy Ellis is there too.

For example Carole - I wanted to get all the births, deaths and marriages for one name - Horstead - in the London area. I put in Horstead as the surname and did a birth search for all years 1866-1920. I then repeated that for deaths and marriages. In the end I got up 9 pages of bmd for Horsteads in London all with refs for 2 units a page. When they have completed the 1837-1866 bit it will be brilliant.

I had a look on http://www.yorkshirebmd.org.uk but couldn't find what you're looking for either. - but it might have other useful stuff if your family is from that area. They might get around to transcribing Pontefract eventually - or (if you aren't already doing some elsewhere) you could offer to help and get the chance to transcribe the area you're after. Hi Thank you to everyone for your advise and comments. I'm still struggling to find James and Maggy's marriage! Think I'll leave it for today and come back to it another day when I might have a rush of inspiration! thanks again to you all joanne

Does familyrelatives.com work out cheaper than 1837online then?

I have not used it yet but I would say it has to work out cheaper if it pulls out just the name you are looking for, especially if you don't know the exact year - with 1837 you get a range of names beginning with just the first three letters.. I was looking for Victor Taylor and was getting several pages, had to second guess which page the V's were going to appear on. It was hard work and cost me a fortune.

And with Family Relatives if you are looking for, say, James Smith's death between 1870 and 1880 in Stockport and there are no matches, it gives you a screen that says 0 matches. It would have cost you 40 credits going into every qtr for 10 years on 1837 to find that there were no matches Lou

Sue in Sussex I don't know when you last used 1837Online, but they have grasped that they were going to lose custom if they didn't get their act together a bit. Here's a preliminary result for George Bennett (births) in 1910: Quarter Year From To Action Jan-Feb-Mar 1910 BENNETT, David - BENNISON, Clara VIEW Apr-May-Jun 1910 BENJAMIN, Beatrice - BENNETT, Miriam Ethel VIEW Jul-Aug-Sep 1910 BENNETT, Evelyn - BENNETT, Minnie VIEW Oct-Nov-Dec 1910 BENNETT, Doris M - BENNETT, Hilda VIEW I agree it used to be just three letters, but it's better now. What it doesn't tell you is if there's no example of a your target name between the boundary names on each page. Christine

1837 does in fact search for the whole surname name now, not just the first three letters. You can include the first three letters of a christian name also sam
