Brenda you really need to know exactly where in Ireland you are looking especially if you are searching a common Irish surname. A good site for information you will need is www.irishgen(.)com which explains what a 'townland' is etc. www.irishorigins(.)com has Griffiths Valuation on line but you have to pay. It explains what Griffiths Valuation is, and if you know the county and parish it can be helpful in locating the townland with the surname you are searching. Once you have the townland you can search the LDS film library and see if they have any church records for that townland/parish. genuki(.)org(.)uk have usefuls links to various county sites. good luck
