There is a Jane Colbran, unmarried, age 24 on the 1871 living in Baltic rd, Tunbridge Wells. She has a 4-month old daughter also called Jane. From FreeBMD, baby Jane also has third initial as K: Births Mar 1871 COLBRAN Jane Sophia K Uckfield 2b 10[35] Definitely a possibility for your John Henry's mother I would say!

His birth is registered as John Henry K Colbran - Sep Qtr 1872 registered in Tonbridge. Kemp was a third Christian name. Regards, Mary

It seems as though he was illegitimate, as there is no father's name listed. Quite possibly though, Kemp was the father's surname - quite common for it to be added as a middle name if the parents weren't married (and therefore the child was taking the mother's surname).

My ggrandmother's cert from 1878 gives her names 'in the box' as Florence Fanny Hooper, father George Hooper Bibb, mother Elizabeth Ann Bibb formerly Stuart. So I'd say that Kemp was another middle name although it could possibly have been his father's surname given to him as a middle name as the parents weren't married. You could try and see whether you can locate a baptism record for him on the chance that the father was named on that Lou

Hi I have just received my first birth cert, is the baby's surname listed with the first name?....... The baby is listed as John Henry Kemp, born 09/07/1872, 2 William Street, Tonbridge Wells......There is nothing written in the fathers space and his mother is listed as Jane Colbran, Laundress, of the same address. John later married in 1891, listing his father as Colbran and subsequently all his kids etc. Is the name 'Kemp' the surname he was given at birth, or will it be another middle name? Hoping for any suggestions, Suzanne***
