Data transfer mix up FTM 2005 - Help please

Morning all, If this makes sense to anyone I would be grateful for some help. I have just changed from Family Tree 4 software to FTM2005. On my old software there was a large 'notes' section in which to put all data/facts found on each individual, where as in FTM there are specific fields for this info - which is great. Trouble is when I've imported the Gedcom to the new software all my facts, dob, pob, census info etc. have ended up in the notes section and not in the specific fields, which is understandable. I am wondering what the easiest way might be to transfer this data to the correct fields. Do I simply have to go through all 348 people systematically transfering and deleting? Is there a report I can print showing just names of people and 'notes' on them if I have them? Many thanks in advance. Em

I do understand what you mean, but I had a virgin 2005 so didnt have this problem. I am sure there must be a way to add all these without having to retype them. If no one comes up with an answer, email FT as they were really helpful when I wrote to them.

Thanks Heather - will do that if I need to. Don't think I could face having to go through everyone individually! Em x

If you are upgrading from an ealier version of Family Tree Maker, then all you need to do it to install the new software. Your existing file will thewn open in the new version without any problem. You don't need to re-load as a Gedcom or anythin like that. Do take a back up, as suggested though in case. Emma's problem appears to be different. I think from ewhat you are saying, you are using some software wher all the details are kept as notes, rather than as discrete daya fields? This is probably why it imports into the notes in FTM as there is nothing to tell it to go into the separate slots. Emma, have a look at the help for your old software, it might just be that there are insructions for saving files in different ways, which might help. Failing that a note to FTM is probably the next thing to do.

Hello everyone, Thanks for the replies. Well FTM say that there is a report I can run which will print just the individuals names and the notes and sources against them - but the only way to put this into FTM in the correct fields is to manually type it in. Understandable really as my old software had no specific fields therefore FTM wouldn't know what to pull through to where. Peter put it better than me. So I'm off to print my 340 odd pages now and guess I shall be up all night entering info. - can't wait to start using the software so the sooner it's all present and correct the better. Helllloooooooo Ann, Have you done you transfer yet? Has it worked OK? If it has do you fancy a glass of wine and helping me with these 340 pages. Em x
