Imagine everything is recorded, reliable and online. You just type in your name and ID and everything is there generated for you, no effort, the full history spanning many generations. Probably it's not far away but it will kill the challenge of the genealogy hobby, it will become like train spotting, quoting it as your hobby will gain social stigma.

Yes, there's far more pleasure in tracking down a relative who has been misspelt, age wrongly recorded and address incorrect on the census, than just finding it straight away. Mind you, I am glad SOME of my relatives have been straight-forward or I would have given up! nell

I still treasure the feeling when I got the photocopy of the Parish register showing the baptism of my GGFx2 - it was a wild chance that I tracked him down from Stepney using his unusual surname and the unusual first name of his son to a location just 2 miles from where I live now. Oh what a feeling when I was proved right and could then go back two further generations.

I guess we all like the 'private investigator' aspect of this hobby.
