I had the same problem with my great-grandmother and she turned out to have died in Belfast! No wonder I couldn't find her on the BMD index. I only found out by looking at the National Probate Calendar - although she didn't leave a will, administration was granted on her estate (of £100, in 1923, so not a lot) in London. |

Don't despair, I spent hours looking with little info, spending loads. Then I asked one of the kind ladies doing 'look ups' to help and bingo! I wasn't sure of the info she came back with at first but once seeing how she referred back through the Census's and a bit of cross referencing/family discussions nudging my 82yr old dads memory a bit it was all confirmed! |

Deborah If you think he was born before about 1875, bear in mind that only 2/3 of all births, marriages and deaths were registered before this time. 1/3 chose not to do so until harsh penalties were introduced about 1875 for people who didnt register. I've had many who must have been in that 1/3 who didn't bother registering... ...You could be looking for someone who simply isnt there... Steven |
