If you're researching v old family history, bear in mind that Maud was also a diminutive of Matilda.

I know that Maud is a name on its own. It is also short for 'Grandmother of my favourite me'!

I always thought Maud was a name in its own right. However, this thread has left me with more questions than answers. Regards, Andy

Hi, I believe Maud is a name in it's own right. My Nan was a Maud but can also be spelt as Maude. Regards, Dawn.

My grandma was Annie Maud, but always called Maud (why? I sure would have preferred Annie!).

I have four Maud's -- all born around the 1890's (in unconnected families).
