Thanks for that Wendy and Heather. Its getting worse after making his mark on both his marriage and daughters birth cert., the census 2 years later has his occupation as Literary Translator, I'm 99.9% sure its the same people. Keith

I'd agree that it is probably Farrell. Looking on Ancestry there are 5000+ Farrell's on the 1901 Census and only 1 Frool. I looked at the image for the 1 26 year old Mabel, a servant in London born in Norfolk. Wonder what you get if you say Farrell with a Norfolk accent? Mistakes do occur on certificates because people didn't always know how to spell their own names and might not be able to read what was written to spot that it was wrong. Add a surname that the Registrar (or whoever) wasn't familiar with to the possibility of a strong accent and the options for misspelling are almost endless.

Probably right Keith, I mean what sort of name is Frool??? Have you looked for any Frools? I always thought certs got it right but my own dads one has his mothers name spelt wrongly.

It does seem likely they were one and the same person Keith, Farrell and Frool could easily be misheard.

Have my GGrandfathers marriage Cert. and has him marrying a Hannah Farrell - St. Pancras 1873. Just recieved my Grandmothers birth Cert. this morning and has mothers name as Hale formerly Frooll. I first thought I had the wrong Cert. but the more I say Farrell and Frooll, the more it sounds the same, am I losing it? Keith
