Thanks everybody, especially Ken. I knew about George, he is another of Emmets' sons/Thomas' brothers, but I didn't have the other info. Am mailing you separately. nell

I've just had a look to see where Whichford is, and it looks like its more in Oxfordshire than in Warwickshire, so it may be worth contacting the Oxfordshire Family History Society as well, I've had a look at their list of publications and cant see anything for Whichford but might be worth emailing them and also the Oxford Records Office to see if they hold parish records for Whichford, I've had quite a few dealings with both the family history society and the records office and theyve always been very helpful. Nell The recurring names indicate that there's a fair possibility of a connection. Emmets's isn't your average name you see cropping up regularly, let alone several times in the same area. Worth a look at those parish registers certainly! Lou

Hi Helen Are you able to get the parish records for Whichford from the LDS or from the Warwick Family History Society? or to get to the Warwick records office. I've got a similar situation with my tree, found a person who had loads of money with the same surname who lived in the same village, at the mo I'm working my way through the parish records which I brought from the family history society to try and work out how their connected. Good luck Karen PS It sounds like there could be a link with family one and two, but viewing the parish records would probably be the best option to know for definate.

I have 3 separate families which I believe may be connected, but I am not sure if there is a connection or just a series of coincidences. I would value your input. Family one EMMETS MATTHEWS 1800-1875 lived all his life in Whichford. His son THOMAS MATTHEWS b. Whichford 1838 is there in 1841 with Emmets and his older brothers John and Henry. Thomas married in Islington 1865 and his eldest son, born 1866 Islington, is called THOMAS EMMETS MATTHEWS. His 2nd son, Henry, dies at 5 weeks. Thomas is a labourer on his wedding cert but on all subsequent certs and census he is described as a dairyman/milk carrier. He dies 1879. Family two On 1881 census: John MATHEWS Head M Male 29 Wickford, Warwick, England Milk Carrier Augusta J. MATHEWS Wife M Female 27 Southwark, Surrey, England Milk Carrier Wife Elizabeth MATHEWS Daughter Female 7 Mile End, Middlesex, England Scholar Rosa L. MATHEWS Daughter Female 2 Bromley, Middlesex, England Scholar Richard W. MATHEWS Son Male 1 Bromley, Middlesex, England Scholar Henry G. MATHEWS Son Male 7 w Bromley, Middlesex, England Emma KELLY Mother M Female 56 Newington, Surrey, England Nurse SM Dwelling 89 Knapp R Census Place London, Middlesex, RG11/ 0498 /22 Page 38 There is no Wickford, Warwicks, I think this should be Whichford. Have found marriage index for John Matthews & Augusta Kelly, so think Emma is really John's mother-in-law. This family reappears in 1901 when John is born Wichford [sic] and now works in a tinware shop in Bromley, Poplar. He has a young son called EMMET. Family 3 In 1871 Louisa Matthews b Bermondsey Louisa age 13 b Walworth John age 19 b Long Compton, Warwickshire [close to Whichford] Richard age 9 In 1881 Lucy A. MATTHEWS Head W Female 43 Bermondsey, Surrey, England Shop Keeper Louiza MATTHEWS Daur U Female 23 Newingtn, Surrey, England Machinist Richd. E. MATTHEWS Son U Male 19 Newingtn, Surrey, England Labeller Henry J. MATTHEWS Son U Male 16 Newingtn, Surrey, England Labeller Mary MATTHEWS Daur U Female 13 Newingtn, Surrey, England Sch Dwelling 56 Portland St Census Place Newington, Surrey, RG11 / Piece / Folio 0546 / 19 Page 11 This family are in Newington, where John Matthews (family 2)mother-in-law was born. Richard E is Richard EMMETS Matthews. I have his birth cert which gives his father's name as JOHN MATTHEWS, occupation DAIRYMAN and his mother as Louisa Matthews, formerly Langley. I know that Matthews is a common surname, but the names EMMETS and Henry occur in all 3 families and all 3 families are linked to the same part of Warwickshire. What do you think? nell
