Often the person who registered the birth couldn't read or write so the registrar just wrote down what he heard. Arthur Dolton Jun 1880 Warwick 5d _51. The first digit of the reference number has not been transcribed but judging by the other numbers used in Warwick it is probably a 6 (651).

Did he have a middle name? Could he have been registered at a much later date when it was realised he would need a birth certificate for some reason or another? Do any of the Dalton image pages for 1879-80 have a pencilled footnote indicating that the birth was registered later? All of the Arthur Daltons (on FreeBMD) registered after 1877 were in Warwickshire Births Mar 1890 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dalton Arthur Coventry 6d 513 Births Sep 1893 --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dalton Arthur James Rugby 6d 541 Births Jun 1895 --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dalton Arthur Franklin Coventry 6d 560 Births Mar 1896 --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dalton Arthur Birmingham 6d 131

There's an Arthur Dolton Jun 1880 registration district Warwick on FreeBMD. Could that be him? I just searched for all Arthurs born in 1879/80 Warwick.
