I had an ancestor listed as licensee of a pub but also a journeyman carpenter. I think in those days often the wife and other members of the family would run the pub.

Hi Christopher, I have just 'asked Jeeves' just type in 'journeyman' Apprentice, journey and then Master. My ancester was Master butcher. Journeyman meant that he knew everything about butchering. Master- Butcher meant he could choose the animal, slaughter, cut and prepare the meat. Denise, Manchester

No the 'journey' comes from the French for day - he has finished his apprenticeship and was originally employed by the day. MB

I think a journeyman is someone who has completed his apprentership and then travels from job to job.
