Here goes: My newly-found fourth cousin (thats another thread!) and I both have a photocopy of my 2 x Gt Grandparents marriage. Mine is from the Manchester RO, his is from the GRO. Both are absolutely identical, so of course, both give the address of the bride as 'Smith St'. My brother however, who could not wait for the three days it took for the cert to come, looked at the original Parish Register for the Church where they married. The entry in the Church Register equally clearly says 'South Street'. No District is given in any of these three cases other than Manchester. The bride's sister lived in Smith Street. The brides brother lived in South Street. The groom was from Miles Platting. Its important as we are trying to trace the grooms first bride and also his father - there are possible candidates in each area...oh, groan! Any ideas anyone? Marjorie

Yes, but how many miles of platting does it take to get from south to smith street! Sorry made me laugh! Jess x

If it was simple, Marjorie, it wouldn't be half as much fun though! Sorry, we're not helping are we????????

Hi Marjorie The RO/GRO copies are obviously wrong - they will have been transcribed from the Parish Register in the first place. So 'South Street' it is'! Dave

David Grr! That is not the answer I wanted! South Street has disappeared, has long since been something else and does not fit in with the scenario I had in mind for Smith Street! Also, I do not trust my brothers eyesight! He will not admit that he needs spex and I reckon a faded 'Smith Street' written in 1859 could easily be read by the vain and stubborn in 2005 as 'South Street'. No use, will have to do it myself. Thanks for your input everyone - and yes, Miles Platting is a daft name for a place, especially as that is ALL it says for an address. Marjorie

If you know the church, does that narrow it down a bit?

Lois No, sadly it doesnt help, its 'St Johns, Manchester' which is about a mile from Smith Street and half a mile from South Street! Marjorie
