Thanks Twinkle! I'll ask at the CRO next time I'm in, then if I have no luck there I'll try contacting the school Jeanette x |

Jeanette I too have a teacher in the early 1800s, but no records survive before 1858 for that particualr school. There are no guarantees as schooling in general was very hit-and-miss and mostly down to individuals or organisations. Later records should be in the local record office. If the school is still there, contact them. If your teacher did something exceptional or was a headteacher, they may have something. |

Please may I ask a question on your thread Joy? What do you think the chances are of there being school records from the early 1800's? It is rumoured that one of my ancestors may have been a teacher at a small village school before he emmigrated to the US in the 1830's. I'd like to find out if this was true. Jeanette x |

Did your school have an Old Girls Association? They may well have records. Our Schools Old Boys Association provided me with several photographs, including one of the whole School and one of our House. Fortunately it was before John Major got there. |

Our local studies library holds those for Croydon, but they may be in a County Records Office, or if the school merged with another, the other school may have acquired the records. |

Hi Joy It might be worth contacting the local area Archives office. They often keep records on old schools. More recent records are possibly kept by the local County Council but in this case they probably wouldn't be open to the public anyway. Kate :) |
