What does a Commercial Traveller do in 1861

Thanks for that Judith and Lorraine. It seems my idea was plausable. It would be great if he had travelled around Europe in those days but I doubt there is any way I could find that out. Maybe he sold groceries around Europe! Nigel |

Nigel, he may well have done just that. One of my gt gt grandfathers was a grocer on his marriage cert but a commercial traveller in later years and on 1861 census it actually says 'commercial traveller, grocery' |

Hi Grampa, Thanks for that. I couldn't believe it could be so straight forward as he used to be a Grocer 10 years earlier. Maybe he travelled selling groceries! Nigel |

Same as today. Travels around selling his employer's products. As opposed to a Travelling Salesman who actually sells goods straight away a Commercial Traveller would have samples and take orders. Travellers samples were sometimes scale models of the manufacturer's items and are now highly collectable. |
