Does anyone know how i can search for a relative that was in closed orders? Would nuns such as this be included on censuss records.

Institutions should be on censuses, even religious houses. The nun may be listed under initial only. Do you know if she changed her name on entering order? I don't know of anywhere specific to look for religious orders' lists, and I imagine the Catholic church doesn't let anyone wonder in and flick through them. Even so a nun's death would have to be registered in the normal way.

You could also try the Catholic Family History Society, Catholic Record Society or the Catholic Central Library. They probably don't have records for all Orders but may be able to help point you in the right direction. There are links to these plus a few other Catholic references from the GENUKI website. Good luck. Louise

I think they were listed under birth names. I have an Isabella Donkin aged 34, one of the nuns listed at the Convent of Mercy in Newcastle in 1881.
