Hi what was Charles wife Catherines maiden name could she be her brothers son or her sisters son or even Charles sisters son by marriage. I noticed ont he 1871 it says Elizabeth Barker or Parker Aunt, then on the 1881 she is a Krafft so is she Charles's sister or Catherines. Colette xxxxxxxxxx

Thanks Collette Therein lies the problem - Can't find a marriage, so I am waiting for a birth cert for Horatio to come which hopefully will solve that problem. Elizabeth Barker appears on the 1861 and 71, but changes her name to Elizabeth Krafft in 81. I know it is the same person as she is a deaf mute (these details do help). I assume Barker is from Charle's mother, Susan as I have just (after 20 years looking) found his birth and paptism in Harwich 1819 - his father is Charles Fredk Kraft - a captain of hussars in Germany. This, at last, gives me the German connection I was looking for. But I still can't find Thomas Aver (transcription?) anywhere else.....

Thanks Susan - certainly worth a try, although the Porter doesn't ring a bell. Peter

Collette Thomas Porter Aves is almost certainly him - I have a thomas Pinter/Porter Aves/Avis as witness to a marriage in 1839 - obviously the father. And a Mary Aves as a witness too. Now I can't find either Thomas later on....and as in 1871 he was a nephew to Charles Krafft I have to work out the relationship....I think Mary Aves must have been Charles Krafft's sister ---back to the drawing board...... Susan. Since I have Charles Krafft marrying Ann Brown in 1839 it would seem that the Mary Aves who is a witness is Ann's sister Mary - so that clears that mystery up. Therefore in 1871 Thomas is the wife's nephew (except that Ann has died by then)...only I think Charles has remarried by then to Ann's sister Catherine (if only I could find the marriage - the nearest I have is Charles Craft Dec Q 1855 London 1c191 and it isn't on free BMD. The page with the Catherine Browns on is illegible....). So, Thomas in 1871 is still the wife's nephew..... Thankyou for the effort. Peter
