My ggrandmother apparently was born in Bromsgrove around 1865 and married ggrandad who, as far as I know, hadn't left Kent before then.

I think people in those days moved around a lot more than you would expect. They went anywhere there was work. Kath. x

Maybe, it still seems far to go .... if Ann and George married, why not marry in the closest place, and not go all the way to Weymouth JUST to marry. There's no evidence that Ann was in service, either. Thanks for the suggestions, it's something I didn't think of.

I found his wife in Portland, Dorset. That is where she was born and her family goes back rather far there. They married in Weymouth. I think the TOBY's (wife's immediate family) moved to Weymouth soon after the birth of the wife's brother. His mother in law died in Weymouth. Found family members there etc. To go all the way to Sussex just to be in service, seems pretty strange, especially back then. I can understand why they went to London eventually,I was just wondering why he didn't go there first but went to Dorset instead!! I hate this family! Still can't find them on the 41, doubt I ever will.

Chloe, Have you found his wife? She may have been born in Weymouth, but in service in Sussex when they met, and they moved to her home town. As for going to London - opportunities were opening up for people there, many people moved from the countryside to London. maggie

Recently found my ggg grandfather, George LOCK on the 1861 census (thank to sks). I had him on the 1851, he is living in Camberwell, London, aged 52 and gives his place of birth as Weymouth. On the 1861, he's in Southwark, aged 62, same profession etc, BUT birthplace is down as Arundel Sussex. If he was born in Arundel, why would a cordwainer go all the way to Weymouth, marry in 1824, have his children there and then move to London??? Chloe
