Just discovered the Ancestry.co.uk and for payment of £6.00 valid for 7 days and limited views of actual census records is great value for money. Can search 1871 1881 1891 and 1901 census's.

That doesnt sound a great offer does it - usually ancestry give a couple of weeks trial and monthly membership for about £7. That gives you full access to all the census plus viewing of the images. Check it out again, this doesnt sound right.

The pay-per-view service is fairly new. There is a two-week trial, which is well-hidden, but not everyone can take it up because they don't have credit cards and whatnot. Having learnt that they intend to put all censuses online within the next few years, I'm going to wait a while yet before getting an annual subscription.

Against the cost of subscription/pay-per-view you have to take into account how much it would cost to buy the CDs of the census(es) you want and how much it would cost in transport etc to get to the relevant records office. nell
