The reason they were there was because my grandad was in the army at the time. All though his wife was originally from ireland. There first son was born here in plymouth in 1874.

Might be worth looking for a death for Elizabeth just in case thats what happened. If they came over around the time of the birth could she have missed out on being registered in the rush for the boat! On the other hand I have a great Aunt who appears to have been entered on every census her parents answered as Kate, even though she was christened Louisa and used that name herself when she left home. Sounds like you're getting close anyway. Simon

well if they were sisters then the elizabeth must have died because she is not there on the census.

No, it would seem likely they are sisters, they could be anything up to 18months apart from the years and that would not be unusual, often they were born within a year of each other.

What makes you think that Elizabeth wasn't Julia's sister?

Lynne

Lynne Report 24 Feb 2005 17:03

I would say you have probably found her as names are often wrong on census. I had a similar problem. On 1881 census she was shown as Lillian Mary, her name on birth cert is Amy Lillian! I still haven't found the birth cert for her sister, named Ellen on the same census though.

Are you asking if the Elizabeth could be Julie? I suppose so, where did you get Julie from....did you assume she was named after her mum? Could she have been Elizabeth Julie and liked the middle name better? Did you also notice if you look at the batch she appears in there is an Esther Corcoran born a month earlier at Kildare to a James Corcoran and Bridget Fleming Corcoran......could this be a further family connection (eg could James be John's brother, and Esther be Elizabeth/Julie's cousin)....does this help (hope it doesn't hinder)?
