I've also always assumed that NS stood for Not Stated on any of my family records. It certainly stands for that nowasays. Sue G |

Thanks all He was a male it wasn't an image of it I looked at but from the cornwall census list and after trawling through all the names could of misread it as N instead of W will go back and check.Did have wife as scolar so could of been ;isted wrong. Thanks again Dawn |

If he is a Smith he would have had an apprenticeship so would have remained one all his life. I would think then that the S would stand for Smith - now we need to work on the 'N'. Are you sure its not a 'W' as that would be white smith. |

I have a rellie on 1891 census for occupation it has N....S On his daughters marriage cert in 1891 his occupation is Smith. Any ideas what the census occupation stands for? Dawn |
