Hi Margaret I've got a couple of families like that. One I haven't worked out yet. But with the other one it turned out he was born illegitimate, although his Mum married his Dad 6 weeks later. It was in the census after he got married that his name changed, so I wonder if he had to use the name that was officially on his birth cert when he got married, then thought he'd better use it on the census too. My grandfather was registered as John Rogers at birth. However when he married he used the name Greenaway (his mother's name) two months after the marriage (1871 Census) he is listed as Rogers, 1881 Census the whole family including children are listed as Greenaway. 1991 and 1901 the name Rogers is in use again. Any ideas?
