The GRO records are quarterly transcriptions of the Local RO records (with all that means for the opportunity to mistranscribe or lose records on theway!). If you're applying to GRO, you use the GRO ref and you usually get a photocopy of their original transcription. If you apply to the Local office you use the Local office ref and they usually send a modern transcription of their original record. The fees are the same; the Local service is usually at least as fast as GRO. Christine

Would the Tipton reference to Richard Biggs be the same as the Dudley one - or have I now got 2 G grandads to choose from, both with the same namme and birth registation? I have tried to find reference to their marriage but found nothing - now does that mean they were never married or its not been found? Why dont people keep these records anymore? I am going to start!

Hello Princess End is between West Bromwich, Wednesbury and Tipton, in the BLack Country. Sometimes in Staffordshire, Sometimes in Worcestershire. I live about 20 minutes away by bus. It now comes under Sandwell. You could try contact the Communty History and Archives Service in Smethwick for any other details about the person and family. YOurs Mim

No, can't see him, or his birth either. Try finding the marriage and getting that, which will give his parents names. Then try to find them on the 1871 census. Carole

Today is the first time I've used these boards and its addictive. I've been in touch with some helpful people on here but cant find details for Richard Biggs - in 1881 return he was married to Rebecca(nee Dobson) and living in Barrow in Furness, in 1901 he was in Whitehaven with lots of children. According to the returns he was born in about 1858-1862 and born at Princes end Stafford, but cant find him on 1871 census returns. Can anyone help? thanks Julia
