can anyone tell me how to find details of a family member who reverted to his mothers maiden name after WW2 and then went off to Canada? Also - any ideas on how to research in Italy - for a non italian speaker?

Do you know where in Canada they went to? This is a pretty huge place :) If you know where they went to, you can then look up the various genealogical societies in each province or you can email the appropiate city library. However in Canada, for records from 1940's onwards you will encounter many slammed doors on information. Most of the provinces have enacted privacy legislation which has been a hindrance in family history especially the last 20-30 yrs. It can be done, but it's difficult.

Lynne -I've sent you an email with some details Gordon - I did have an address in the 1960's but by now he is likely to be in his mid eighties - I would really like to find his son but it's a delicate situation so have to tread carefully! Julia

You'd be surprised what writing a letter to the local newspaper will do. Most editors are only too glad to include letters from abroad. Just say who you are etc etc and I'm sure someone will respond to you.
