Thank you both! It has certainly given me something to think about. Her son (John Henry) was very well off, I wonder why he didn't supoort her? Although, he did live in Brighton for a spell. It puzzles me that if they fell out, how come she was buried in the family grave?! |

In 1871 she's a monthly nurse in Brighton with the Banner family. So it definitely looks as though she reverted to her maiden name pretty soon after being widowed. Haven't come across this before! Interesting. |

Think I have found her in 1891, too, living as a pensioner aged 80 in Islington. Transcribed as Faisbant (!) but clearly Fairbank on the image. |

They used Gardner. There were five children - John Henry, Alfred, Emily, Mary Ann and Anne Maria. |

Her name was Susan Fairbank and she was born in 1810 and died in 1892. She was born in Halstead, Essex. She married Henry Gardner. |

Is it usual for a widow to go back to their maiden name? My ggg grandmother was widowed in 1867 but did not die until 1892. The only entry that can possibly be her on the 1881 census is under her maiden name but has the right age and place of birth. Could this be her? |
