I'm a fan of Rootschat too and I'm with Tricia - surely if you don't advertise where you got the info from who's going to know ? I don't think it was only the Ancestry thing though - how about the BVRI and NBI surely there were copywrite restrictions on those too but lookups were openly offered? I was reading all the posts re copywrite on a thread they had going but it went way over my head ~:0( How does GR get round this one I wonder?

I think it is a potential problem with all information obtained from commercial sources and there has been a lot of discussion about this on Rootschat. I think a lot of the discs that people purchase are also protected by copyright and if this is the case I don't see how anyone can do any searches for other people at all except by visting libraries and using original documents(i.e. the original census in Family Records centres etc ). All seems a bit complicated to me so I don't want to get bogged down with it. Of course, if you don't disclose your source and don't copy and paste sentences which obviously belong to Ancestry and don't use the term Ancestry I fail to see how anyone would be any the wiser but please don't quote me on that!!!! And, yes, people advertising (even for free) searches on Ancestry are infringing copyright. That's what I have been told. Tricia

Does that mean that people doing lookups on here may may cause the same prob? hope not, i've had loads of much needed help from the peeps on here! c x

This is due to people using Ancestry to help with searches. All information on Ancestry is subject to Copyright and none of it should be transcribed in any way at all. They are worried about any possible repercussions Tricia

I'm glad I found this post, because I was rather worried when I found RootsChat offline too. I have emailed Sarah & Trystan about this to find out if it is a permenant thing or not, but have not as yet had a reply. If it is offline permanently, it is a real shame as it was a brilliant site and the people on there were so friendly and always so willing to help with any problems. Hopefully it will be back online soon! Rebecca

What a shame. Really good site. Maybe the same could be applicable to this site, re copyright laws when doing look-ups etc. ? Rather worrying. Joy

The statement says: 'RootsChat was created by Trystan and Sarah, and has been built up with the help of our users and volunteer moderators. RootsChat is not a commercial company, and is run as a hobby, the server costs borne personally out of our own pockets. We, and most of our moderators also have full time work and other commitments, and try our best to keep RootsChat running. Due to legal reasons, we feel that without support from our users on matters of copyright, we have no option but to review the future of RootsChat.' It then goes on to give an e-mail contact address and says that free webspace is still available. My guess: Too many members have been flouting copyright laws when doing look-ups etc.

I registered last night and had a quick look round the RootsChat site. Looked interesting and helpful. Visited again this morning to find that the site has gone offline. If you click on any of the board links you get a message that includes the statement: 'Due to legal reasons, we feel that without support from our users on matters of copyright, we have no option but to review the future of RootsChat.' Sounds ominous! Thoughts? Dave
