Debby I would add - please check that wherever you go isn't closed for stocktaking or any other reason and that they will be open the day you want to go. Some records offices close at lunchtime. Write down a priority list of what you want to know and make sure you take the relevant info with you. Nothing worse than finding a useful resource and being unable to remember which name/date/place you wanted to look up. nell

ooo I'm all giddy now! What fab advice! Just worried that I have that many I want to look up I know I'll run out of time. Better go towards the end of the week or I'll never get the garden/bathroom done! The library has 1841 - 1901 census returns and BMD on microfiche so I think the library might be a good one to go to first. Debby

Debby, I think there might be some tips in the general advice stuff on the home page of this site which might help you. My advice is to be really organised. Make a list of what you want to look up. Then most records offices have a website with advice or you can phone them to check what they have before you visit. I've been to a few places in the London area and have found that it alwasy takes longer than you think. However, don't let this put you off. The staff are unfailingly helpful and it is sooo exciting when you start finding things. Have a good time. Louise

Take you glasses if you need them, headache tablets, plenty of change for drinks machines and if they have lockers you have to pay for to put all your bags in. Dont believe you have all the time in the world, it goes very quickly, so pace yourself. Good luck.

I've got next week off work and seriously thinking about visiting my local records office and reference library. LOL - I'm supposed to gardening and painting the bathroom! Have any of you knowledgable people out there any handy tips please? I've never been to one before and not sure what to expect. I've searched the archives on this board and the Records Office board and was surprised to find very few threads on this subject. Thanks Debby
