Claire There's a National Archives leaflet on line about that very topic here: www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/familyhistory/name/ but in case you didn't know, people don't have to go through any legal formalities, they can just change their name, provided it isn't done for fraud purposes. nell

If you Google 'Deed poll' you will see the website for it, lots of info...Including Contrary to popular belief, there is no central register of name changes in the United Kingdom. Deed Polls are not registered anywhere unless they were enrolled in the Close Rolls of the Chancery (from 1851 to 1902) or from 1903, in the Enrolment Books of the Supreme Court of Judicature, which is located within the Royal Courts of Justice in the Strand, London.
