Genealogy as a qualification

Just a thought Can anyone advise as to what sort of qualifications could be attained and where one would study to become a genealogist - family history is so addictive - either ones own or somebody elses - that it could be enjoyable to learn something that you could attain some sort of qualification for. Does all that make any sense to anybody??

The Institute of Heraldic Studies in Canterbury do courses. There are lots of study weekends, organised by people like the Society of Genealogists and various universities have in the past offered courses, though these seem to be increasingly curtailed. Organisations like WEA may offer evening classes. Alternatively, your local family history society will have a programme of talks, conferences etc.

Ann Yes there is a qualification I think from the Society of Genealogists. But I also think there are various courses that various universities run on local history etc which might be useful. nell

Found this by googling: Courses, Education and Qualifications The Institute of Heraldic and Genealogical Studies is an independent educational charitable trust, established to provide full academic facilities for training and research in the study of the history and structure of the family. Clearly defined routes enable students to reach the level of qualification required for competent practice in the profession of genealogy. Ann - coincidentally my sister and I were discussing this at the weekend and on searching the internet came up the Institute others have mentioned here. I wondered if there were any degree courses. If you find out any other info please let me know.

I was hoping you wouldn't ask that, Ann. I THINK it stands for Workers Educational Association. It's the only organisation in my area that runs interesting courses, but most of them are during the day.... when I'm at work!

Brenda I'll investigate that tomorrow - time flies when you are having fun so I may be forced off here shortly when hubby realises the time - unless he's fallen asleep downstairs - thats the norm Ann
