Hi Emma, No snow here in Shropshire. Glad you're sorted - I find the Northallerton CRO very user friendly. If you do go there, don't forget to 'phone up and book a viewer in advance. They do get very busy. Best wishes, Jill

Morning Jill, How's the snow where you are? I probably didn't word my first message very well as what I was trying to say was, I have been told that once I have found the entries of events I want for Whitby and Scarborough from the Northallerton office, I then need to contact Keighley to see if they have further information on those events. This is what had originally confused me. I took from this that Northallerton had only transcripts of the registers and Keighley had the actual Parish Records, even though they're in different Ridings of Yorkshire. It was clarification of this confusion that I was after, which Anne and yourself put me right on. em x

Hi Emma, Yes, Richmond, Scarboro and Whitby are all covered by Northallerton although it looks as though they only have transcriptions for Scarboro'. I've been to Northallerton on a number of ossasions. I am a little confused as to why you think Keighley records would be held there. I'm interested if you do locate the records for Keighley - I have a baptism in Howarth which I need to find! All the best, Jill

Thank you very much Anne. That's cleared that up totally for me! Brain's on a go slow...just like GR tonight. Em

Hi Jill, I'm aware Keighley is West Yorkshire and that's one of the factors that have confused me! Everything I need should be under Richmond, Scarborough and Whitby. In your list are these covered by Northallerton. It seems from the website Anne gave me that they are. Have you used Northallerton Records Office before? Em

The Bishops transcripts are copies of the parish record entires which had to be made every so often and sent to the bishop's office. If you can, its the parish record that will have more details - although often not all that much. It very much depends on who was keeping the records. Some are excellent and some are just a list of names and dates. Sometimes the parish record has got lost or damaged and then the bishops transcripts are better than nothing. Anne

Hi Em, I have a list of the Parish registers held at Northallerton. I'm afraid that there is no mention of Keighley in it's own right. I've just looked at Genuki - it looks as though the records are held in Bradford. Keighley is West Yorkshire, not North Yorkshire. Jill

Anne, Thank you very much. I'm having a look now. Aparently Northallerton RO doesn't have a web site listing what they hold though, so I'll print it from GENUKI. Do you know what the differences are between the transcripts and registers? It's listing them seperately so I presume they're not the same thing. Thank you again Anne, Em

If you look on GENUKI it lists each county and then each parish and tells you where the records are held. Alternatively you could look on the websites of the record offices. Again you will find all this on GENUKI. Anne

Hello all, I'm now pre 1837 on every single line of mine and I'm a tad confused regarding what I've been told about where North Yorkshire parish records are held. Have been told Northallerton County Records Office should be first port of call - and once I have found the entries in question ie. names and dates, I need to go to Keighley West Yorkshire to look up the same thing but to see if there's any extra information recorded in their records! Fathers names and occupations etc may be recorded in the Keighley records. Do I take from this that Keighley holds the true parish records and Northallerton just has books listing basic info and dates which are taken from the parish records. Unfortunately Northallerton's shut all next week so I can't call them, and I can't find anything on Keighley's office on the web yet. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Em
