Hi I have a marriage certificate from 1839, in the age column there is no ages identified, but it appears to say 'Fully', (it is difficult to read), anyone know why the ages are not specified. Been bugging me for ages Many thanks, Linda

Hi Linda It was quite common for marriage certs NOT to state age. They usually said 'Full Age' or 'Minor'. Sam

It is the equivilent of over 18 or over 21 if one declined to give their age depending on the age requirent at the time. So means 'Legally old enough' Whether they were or not is another matter Jess x

Linda the main reason they said 'of full age' as opposed to giving you an exact age, is the reason they also don't give bride's occupation, or neglect to mention that the groom's father is dead, and that is to make your life as a genealogist harder! nell
