Many Thanks Jan. The Westminster one looks the most likely but I don't really think it's him. I think I am just going to have to try a few certs and see if I can find him that way. However since last night I have found a George Wright, Market Porter aged 33 on 1901 in Whitechapel, another possibility I think.

On the IGI there's a George with father John born 1863 , mother Mary, christened at St Olave's, Hart Street, London.

What a challenge! Assuming that 1861 was his date of birth, but allowing 5 years either way and searching for a birthplace of London, I found: Charles SIMMONS Head M Male 59 Southwark St Olave, Surrey, England Grocer Provision Dealer and the above chappie's family George J. WRIGHT Servant U Male 19 St Botolph Bish, Middlesex, England Shopman In The Above Business (Timber Merchants) on the basis that perhaps George chose to follower his employer's line of work! Much better (though born in 1858) Geo. WRIGHT (Head) M Male 23 Westminster, Middlesex, England Fruit Salesman Sarah WRIGHT Wife M Female 21 Blandford, Dorset, England Dressmaker

No his name was George Wright and he was a widower. This has been known for many years. The poblem is he does not appear on any censi as the right person with all the right details. If I could find out who his first wife was I'd be laughing. One witness I think is a cousin of his. I memorial cards for that family and my Aunt says they were cousins. One has a distinctive name and I have found his birth ref. I also found him on here and messaged the person whose tree he was on. She promised to get back to me ages ago and never did. I may have to get that birth cert and see if I can relate the families by looking at that one. Basically my mom hated her dad for good reason and never wanted him found. Maybe it's meant to be. Anyway thanks for all your help, if anyone has a brainwave-let me know, mines fried. I can't believe he's doing this to me, I've got the other line back 4 generations!

If his dad was in an infirmary perhaps he and his mum were in a workhouse/staying with relatives. Who are the witnesses on his marriage cert? Any clues there? nell

This is the problem Nell. His father was John Wright, bricklayer, deceased on Georges marriage cert. I cannot find George on the 1871 or 1881 census. I've found George Wrights aged 1 all over London but not with a John father who's a bricklayer. I have found a John Wright in Homerton Union Infirmary in 1881 listed as Bricklayers Labourer who looks a likely father. But I can't find the mothers name unless I can find George as a child on a census or the birth cert. I don't know for sure that he was born in Hackney, but the family has always said it is so, Hackney, Whitechapel etc. I am really stuck unless I am just overlooking something.

Pat Synopsis: you know your grandfather was a greengrocer called George Wright who died between 1933-39 and you have found: 1861 George Wright born in Hackney 1901 a greengrocer called George Wright living Hackney gives age as 38. 1918 greengrocer George Wright marries giving age as 48. 1934 George Wright aged 79 dies in Hackney 1935 George Wright aged 72 dies in Hackney. BUT you don't know that the George Wright born 1861 is the same one on the 1901 census or who got married in 1918 and possibly neither of the deaths are the right man either. Do you know that he was born in Hackney? If he was born 1861 have you tried finding him in 1881? What was his father's name? nell

My maternal gfather is turning out to be a right royal pain in the butt. I have the marriage cert in 1918 where he gives his age as as 48 and occupation greengrocer. Grandma was 28. I know when my mom was a child he sold fruit and veg from a horse drawn barrow. He cannot be found on any census as George Wright born or living in Hackney with the right father and at the right age. But on 1901 there is a George Wright greengrocer , Hackney aged 38 giving a birth year of 1863. So I think to myself that he's lying on the marriage cert because he was donkeys years older than her. Now I look for a birth and find a George Wright born Hackney 1861-looks promising. I know he died between 1933 and 1939 for fact. BUT if his wife registered the death did she know how old he actually was. I have found George Wright death Hackney 1934 aged 79 George E Wright death Hackney 1935 aged 72 None quite fit. The other I found actually aged 70 when he died in Hackney I got the death cert for and it's not him. I am making an assumtion that he died in Hackney because they lived there and Grandma died there after him. What do I do now please???
