Hi Just been playing around on Ancestry to find various members of a family - already done parts but missing on some of the censi. Did a few variations on search and got a hit in 1901 for the mother who I assumed had died as she was then 83 - mother was listed as Thomas instead of Frances! Even better 2 of her children were living with her aged 59 & 46 - single searches for one of them had produced nothing. Then I found another on 1881 living with her sister and husband - another mistransciption for the husband! Still to find them all on the 1891 but just wanted to say there is a lot of luck involved with your searches due to mistranscriptions so don't give up! Debby

Debby Well done! You're right though, when trying to find people on the census you have to be really creative in your thinking. I've found a son called Mary Ann on the 1861 census when he was really called Moses! Eliza Moore became Eliza Thorne in 1871 and her sister became Emma Marthers instead of Matthews Emma's place of birth in 1881 was Camligger instead of Cambridge. My Elizabeth L. smoothy became Elizabeth D. Smothey. 1891 gave one of my Smoothys as Smithee. Elizabeth L. had wisely got married, but instead of appearing as Elizabeth L. Vine, she is down as Elizabeth L. Kine!!! The 1901 gave my Smoothy family as Lenorthey, grandfather Jeuel as Denel, great-uncle Lemuel as Leonard and their places of birth as Limperhoe and Limperhal when in fact it was Limpenhoe. Sometimes its amazing we ever find them at all! nell

Hi Nell I better get a bigger creative head on then as I can't find them on the 1891 now but I won't give up! I tend to take a break from some of my lines as I soon get disheartened but then it's worth it when you come back to it and voila! A nice hit! Debby

It wasn't one of mine but while i was searching on ancestry i saw Leicestershire mistranscribed as Lichtenstein. I knew it should have been Leicestershire as i knew the village

Well done - it just shows that you really have to think out of the box sometimes. I wondered why I couldn't find the death of my gg grandmother Sarah Ann Slatter. When I eventually found her she was listed as Samuel Ann!!

Nell And don't forget Emily Smoothy transcribed as Timothy! I've had some real gems as well and you definitely need to be creative to find them! Lou

The census transcription with Lichtenstein instead of Leicestershire WAS one of mine - I thought it was even more daft when I found that the rellie hadn't even moved away from his place of birth. The village was in Lichtenstein when he was born and had moved to Leicestershire by census time!!

Hi, I had a family Baughan who became Bangham on the 1901census. Moe interestingly, on the norfolkpubs site one of the same family was the proprietor of the pub and was listed as Bangham again instead of Baughan some 35 years later!. Jayne

Just an update folks. Have now found 3 of them on the 1891 - another mistranscription! Hanley instead of Haxby - just keyed in Mothers christian name, age on 1891 census and where born and there she was! Just 2 to go for that family and nearly done - yippee! Debby
