See below in a few mins, I type slow when I'm tired!.....

I need someone to explain to me in words of one syllable (as though I'm about 3 years old would be good!) how to navigate that site! I have established that a Mariner Merchant Service would need to serve an apprenticeship. I have found a listing that says apprenticeship records for this are in BT151 and BT152. I have clicked on every button on the page after that and can't go any further. Is there no-where else to go (other than to KEW) or am I doing something wrong? Thanks Lou

Hi Lou, I'd be very interested, too, but I suspect that the only next step is to go to Kew to access those files, or to get someone else to research them for you. It's a bit frustrating being 12000 miles away! Have you had any luck with the A2A site search? That's where some of my breakthroughs came from. Sue (in NZ)

Lou not sure but I think it just gives you the document numbers that you have to go to Kew to examine. If you ask on the board I think there are a few people that live near Kew willing to do look ups. I have only been there once but I know they keep records of all apprenticeships there. Good luck Irene

Hi, Yes, you have to go to Kew. I got my gt grandfather's ticket and other stuff from there. It takes a lot longer than you think it is going to. Gwynne

Oh blast! Was hoping I might be able to get an indication of whether any papers exist beforehand. Ok...well, here to Kew is not an option so looks like I'm going to have to pay someone to find them for me. Any suggestions anyone? Has anyone used someone to find apprencticeship records before? Lou

Hi Lou It looks as if there is an index in BT 150, but only a sample survive in BT 151 and BT 152. You are probably unlikely to find anything but the info in the index. Chris and Michael Watts have produced an excellent book on Merchant seamen. It is thick and rather worthy, but does tell you exactly what there is and how to find it. B

Hi Brenda Thank you, I'll take a look at BT150 and try and get hold of a copy of the book. It now appears that my other gggrandfather was also a Mariner Merchant Service (Henry's son William married Edward's daughter Elizabeth) so that's two people I need to try and locate. It gets trickier! Lou
