James I have a great grandmaother who I thought was born in 1858 the reason I thought this was because of the census info that I had on 1881,1871,1891,1901. Guess when she was born?1853!!!!! defo her though and I will never know why she lied. Maybe she really didnt know or didnt want her husband to know? Ciara

Dates can be off due to transcription errors or because that was the year the birth was recorded instead of the actual year of birth or because some people were just bad at math.

As the other answer says, you needed parents permission if you were under 21 so lots of people lied.

James The simple answer is that he lied on his marriage cert - possibly his parents didnt approve of his intended? Marjorie

Hi all, I have a 1879 marriage cert for Peter Conroy his age is given as 21 so db should be c1858 in Wigan father John conroy. I have found a Peter Conroy on the 1871 census age 14 in Wigan ( boarder) db should be c1857 yet his birth cert that I sent for says db was 1861. Were numbers that far out or am I on the wrong horse. Regards James
